Why do people join a Scrabble club?

  • I would say that more casual players join clubs simply because they enjoy the game and want to be able to play it more often, while competitive players, on top of those reasons, join clubs to improve at the game. Both sets of players are also looking for a place to socialize and meet people that share this niche interest. CNY Scrabble Club

What is a night at your Scrabble club like?

  • My club is still pretty small, so there will be a group of maybe 4 people split between two boards. We have a mix of CSW and NWL players, so we usually end up switching between dictionaries so everyone gets to practice the dictionary that they want; people playing an unfamiliar dictionary get to use the cheat sheet :)

My club is free to join and free to play and you'll find players of all skill levels there. Some people stay for maybe 2 games, while the more experienced players can play 4 or 5 games in a row before getting tired. CNY Scrabble Club
  • If you were a first-time visitor to my club, you would be introduced to people who are primarily late 40s and older and very friendly. You would play your first game with me or another seasoned player who can be very casual but still engage you to find out your skill level, level of interest, and level of comfort. We would cover some of the basics about competitive rules and practices, but would focus mostly on playing the game. You would be given one or more cheat sheets that would be helpful to study in order to methodically become a better player. Indianapolis Scrabble Club
  • 1. We meet twice a week, Thursdays at 6.45 p.m. (3 rounds) and Sundays at noon (5 rounds). The entry fee is $3 and $5 respectively.

    2. On Thursdays we have an ongoing ladder system. When you do well you go up the ladder, and vice versa. You mostly play with your peers.

On Sundays we use Swiss pairing for the first round. For example: if we have 10 players, #1 plays #6, #2 plays #7 etc. Rounds 2 to 4 are king-of-the-hill with no repeats. Round 5 is king-of-the-hill where repeats are permitted.

    3. When new, inexperienced players arrive, for the first two sessions they are given: (a) cheat sheets with 2 and 3 letter words they can refer to in play, (b) 5 minutes extra on the clock (c) no-penalty challenges and no penalty for playing an unacceptable word.

    4. We also had 7 tournaments a year. Our biggest event is the Canadian Open. Calgary Scrabble Club
