Spelling rules for words with double consonants

The double consonant rule makes spelling easier by giving two conditions that have to be met before writing two consonants next to each other. Double consonant rule:

1. The last two letters in a word are a vowel followed by a consonant.
2. The word only has one syllable.

If these two conditions are met you can double the consonant before adding the suffix '-ed' or '-ing'. The most common suffixes where this spelling rule applies are '-ed' and '-ing'.
